This blog and this announcement are long overdue. I am excited to announce the launch of this new blog, which will focus on issues and ideas pertaining to digital literacy. I’ll explain what digital literacy and digital fluency (used in the title of this new blog) mean to me in upcoming posts.
Why This New Blog?
In October 2019, our library dean asked me to take on a new full-time role with our academic library, that of the Digital Literacy Librarian. Our university had recently identified digital literacy as a strategic priority, and my library dean thought that my professional and educational background – an eclectic mix of careers and interests, all heavily involving technology and teaching technology – would be the perfect fit for this new role. I took me all of about 5 minutes to buy into the idea and get very excited about it. This role meshes together that eclectic background, my love for teaching, and my love for technology.
My work these past two years has been exciting and busy. I have come across great ideas to share and discussions to facilitate, and I’ve told myself each week that I need to set myself up with a platform through which I can formally share these ideas and engage in these discussions with colleagues. This needs to be separate from my existing genealogy education blog. So I am finally making myself carve out this platform and this time.
